Mariah Ashley
I’m Mariah, the artist behind Slow Desert Studio.
After years spent working as a photographer, I moved to the Sonoran Desert and found myself wanting to make things with my hands again — slowly, imperfectly, and simply because I loved making them.
Most of my work begins with an encounter: a roadrunner on a morning walk, a donkey I can’t stop thinking about, the shape of a saguaro against the evening sky.
Made with a soft spot for the overlooked
I’ve always had a tenderness for animals — particularly the humble ones, the hardworking ones, and the ones we tend to pass by without really seeing.
Slow Desert Studio is my way of paying closer attention. Each piece is made by hand and allowed to keep the marks of that process: texture, irregularities, brushstrokes and stitches. I want the finished work to feel a little timeworn and well-loved, like something you might have discovered in an old desert home and decided to keep forever.
